MARIUM ZAFAR, PSYD

Marium Zafar, Psy.D. is a South Asian American licensed clinical psychologist who has been practicing in New York City since 2011. Dr. Zafar values the therapeutic relationship as an integral component of change that often comes from individuals gaining insight into their lives, their relationships and how they view themselves and the world. She implements a cognitive-behavioral and interpersonal framework for therapy, while remaining flexible with this approach and treating people within their cultural context. Dr. Zafar believes collaboration is crucial in order for therapy to feel successful.

Dr. Zafar has dedicated her clinical practice to supporting the mental wellness of South Asian women navigating the unique complexities of their lived experiences. As a South Asian, Dr. Zafar recognizes that symptoms of anxiety, depression, and ADHD are frequently intertwined with cultural expectations, family dynamics, and the "tug-of-war" inherent in bicultural identity. Her work focuses on the intersectionality of being South Asian, and she provides specialized guidance for identity development, modern dating, and interpersonal relationships. Dr. Zafar offers a culturally-informed space where clients can bypass the burden of explaining their cultural background and instead focus on deep, transformative healing. By addressing the layers of first-generation and immigrant identity, she empowers women to reconcile competing expectations and foster an authentic, resilient sense of self.

Dr. Zafar received her Doctorate of Psychology at Wright State University and her dissertation focused on increasing awareness of mental health issues in South Asians. Dr. Zafar completed her internship at Wright State University and Dayton Children’s Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She completed a two year postdoctoral fellowship in pain management at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
